Hidden Emotions
Hidden Emotions
Davis Publications Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Norwood High School

Student Name: Anna Button
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: I made this artwork because I think it is important to show the difference between how people feel on the inside vs how they present themselves. Hiding emotions shows how someone can seem happy but truly they aren't. The weaving texture of this piece is able to portray the two emotions.

MAEA BIPOC Student Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Waltham

Student Name: Adelpha Bathol
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This is a self-portrait with a creepy lady in the background. I wanted to scale up a drawing I did in my sketchbook from observation. I noticed that my jacket looked spooky in the background, so I turned it into a creepy figure. I went ahead with the idea because I was excited to paint with bright colors. The goal for working on this piece was to try out working on a large scale in oil paint.

Virginia M. Diani Adams Memorial Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Somerville Public Schools

Student Name: Leo Chiu
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: My Grandma makes greeting cards from pressed plants, pretty paper, and drawings of birds. I made this tea set to honor her art and show her the influence that she has made. Her art changes with the seasons, so I followed the seasons as a theme across the pieces. I used pressed plants collected from nature to make the teapot’s designs.

Blick Art Materials Gift Card Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Oliver Ames High School

Student Name: Samantha Johnson
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: My composition is inspired by the stress that comes from late night study sessions during finals. My main motivation to come to school was to buy the chocolate bars my classmates were selling, and they became my go to study snack. The contrast between the bright white of the paper and computer screen among the dark environment capture the last minute, stressful nature of the situation.

Student Name: Natasha Bradshaw
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: This vase was made to honor my dear grandmother Belsi who has unfortunately passed. She was from Costa Rica and had a passion for her garden where she grew French Marigolds. They represent power of hope and that one can survive even the strongest tropical storm. When she passed, our family faced the strongest storms of all…grief.

Blick Art Materials Gift Card Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Fairhaven High School

Student Name: Cadence Harris
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: My version of a Memento Mori, with objects that are significant to me. It’s a self-portrait, because I’m made up of everything that I love. It’s done in acrylics, with items that show who I am as a person, my love of music, academia, painting, and a skull to remind us of the inevitability of death. This was the last piece of my AP Art & Design portfolio, focusing on unconventional self-portraits.

Disassociation Daydream
Hat Sisters Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Lowell High School

Student Name: August Szczesiul
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I have an active imagination, and I often use it as an escape from reality, where I explore a different world of endless possibilities that I have complete control over. In this piece, I am falling asleep in class, and the world around me fades away as my dreams come to life. The cool background is still, dull, mundane, and distant, in contrast to the warm, chaotic, lively dreams pieced together.

Gripping Generations
Gripping Generations
Art for All Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Dennis Yarmouth Regional High

Student Name: Lauren Campbell
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: My 3D sculpture, Gripping Generations, displays the subject of age and the juxtaposition of youth and continuous age. I wanted to investigate how the human body physically changes along with psychological adaptations as time advances. There are also inscriptions along the hands which emphasize the subject. I chose to smoke fire this piece to present the hands stuck within time.

Student Name: MARGARITA SAVAGE
Grade: Grade 12

Organization or School Affiliation: Falmouth High School

Student Name: Jaylynn Fernandez
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: For this project I chose the yin-yang symbols because it described how my life went in 2022. There were many negative memories, but the positive ones balanced them out and created the inspiration of the yin-yang form of my vessels. My true emotions were written to reflect the message that I was balancing my feelings to fit together in the end.

Artist Statement: In 2021, my family lost our home to a sudden fire. As I processed this loss, I found myself thinking “I’d sacrifice my own life to be back in my home.” Therefore, I was willing to strike a deal with any higher power that would listen. Meaning I was ready to make a bargain; wanting to reclaim lost time.

Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This piece is an emotional response to the challenge of living with asthma as a runner. When creating the composition, I focused on the figure trying to breathe & perform beneath the surface of the water. This was to evoke a response to my struggle by creating an uneasiness in the viewer.

Green Etched in Stone
Printmakers of Cape Cod, Inc. Best Print Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Falmouth High School

Student Name: Ellery Wilson
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: I saw these ferns while I was on a walk in the woods and I noticed how unique they were. They spiraled on the stones they sat upon with their tiny circular leaves pressed against one another. The ferns created pools of green on the stones, covering them with the accompaniment of moss. I sketched the ferns in my journal and then decided to create a linoleum carving of them.

Artist Statement: Fear of the future is a piece that highlights the lack of control we have over our future. This piece is a self portrait that portrays the overwhelming feeling that a senior has about the unknown in front of them. I chose to portray this portrait in black and white with extreme lighting to highlight the intense fear and emotion.

Blissful Reader
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Norwood High School

Student Name: Audrey Haberlin
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: What does a lifelong love of reading look like? Looking back on my life I realized that books have always been a constant source of happiness for me. When I was young I enjoyed the bliss that only reading can give. I emulated that bliss by using stippling to portray to the viewer the dreamlike trance that reading induces. I still see so much of my current self in this snapshot of me as a toddler.

Student Name: Madeline Sabens
Grade: Grade 12

I’m very happy with the form of this vessel. For decoration, I used thin strips of tape to create a design, applied slip and smoke fired it in a metal trash can with newspaper.

Stages of Cheese
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Dennis Yarmouth Regional High

Student Name: Isabel Colon
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: I created this work as a 4 piece dinnerware set called “stages of cheese”. The inspiration of this piece came from the boundary crossing of functionalism and conceptualism. I used a slab technique, using press molds in order to create each piece, and variety of hole makers to create each of the holes. Lastly the surface treatment was low fire glazes.

Under the Covers
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Billerica Memorial High School

Student Name: Herin Lee
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: What gives us peace of mind and sense of safety? "Under the Covers" comes from one of my favorite childhood memories. It depicts a safe environment in which a child is protected under his favorite, cozy blanket from the dangers of the dark outside. I used soft pastels to create the contrast between light and dark and to suggest a sense of lighted, safe personal place within dark surroundings.
