A Slice of Heaven
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Somerset Berkley Regional High School

Student Name: Analise Winslow
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: In this photograph, vivid lighting and color make an ordinary corner pizza shop transform into an extraordinary place. The contrast of the dark background leaves an eerie glow surrounding the building that makes the pizza shop seem otherworldly. Through editing I first decreased the exposure and slightly increased the vibrance to create the surreal feeling of a utopia in a deserted town.

The Mourning After
Cape Cod Potters, Inc. Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Falmouth High School

Student Name: Isabella Hawkins
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: This vase was inspired by the aftermath of the passing of my grandfather, a veteran who received a military funeral. There were lots of flower arrangements at the ceremony. My vase is covered in brown and green calla lilies to resemble the browning calla lilies the day after the funeral, and to symbolize that there is growth after death.

Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom
Davis Publications Category Award: Drawing
Organization or School Affiliation: Weston high school

Student Name: Tarik Muhammad
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: In “Animal Kingdom,” I depict the struggles of the modern economy and how it’s affected by social class and societal values. Each standing animal, representing the gluttonous, predacious elite, is throwing away impactful objects to imply their disregard for societal values. The homeless rat represents survival, even if it may be associated with filth. Exploitation creates humanitarian food chains.

Wary Heart
Wary Heart
Davis Publications Category Award: Drawing
Organization or School Affiliation: Phillips Academy Andover

Student Name: Heyon Choi
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: Wary Heart is a close-up reflection of a heart that has resorted to isolation after being hurt. Though locking yourself away may seem like a grotesque over-exaggeration, I hope that viewers can empathize and understand it as a mode of survival. To express the grim reality of many people’s broken hearts, I relied on various drawing pencils to express darkness, shadows, and textures.

Unassuming Danger
Unassuming Danger
Davis Publications Category Award: Painting
Organization or School Affiliation: Falmouth High School

Student Name: Aubrey Martin
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: When creating this piece, I was drawn to the juxtaposition of the dark rocks in the background against the bright blue sky and the sharp, contrasting highlights. I was impressed by the sheer magnitude of the scene and how the rocks seemed to tower over you. From far away, it simply appears to be a large rock formation--the quarry's afterimage, a relic of time--but not everything is as it seems.

The Hidden Library
The Hidden Library
Davis Publications Category Award: Mixed Media
Organization or School Affiliation: Oliver Ames High School

Student Name: Abigail Glover
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: "The Hidden Library" is carved from and built within an old, discarded book. Inside, a small dragon enjoys a peaceful morning within the walls of a serene library. This sculpture displays how art can breathe new life into objects that were previously old and unused, and tells a story of finding comfort and purpose among art, literature, and nature.

Come on, Hit Me!
Come on, Hit Me!
Davis Publications Category Award: Photography
Organization or School Affiliation: Somerset Berkley Regional High School

Student Name: Evan Costa
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: Come on, hit me! This dialogue echoes throughout the photo and the phrase depicts the emotion the subject is feeling. I modeled light and shadow to convey the intense feelings of the boxer as he anticipates and welcomes the punch that is coming. Through first person point of view, harsh spotlight and radial blur I show the rawness and realism of the fight.

Burclover
Burclover
Davis Publications Category Award: Ceramics
Organization or School Affiliation: Falmouth High School

Student Name: Lillianne Smith
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: I found a cool spiky seed outside, the burclover. It has a strangely symmetrical outer layer of spikes. I wanted to capture the protective nature of the seedpod. The outside of the seed is rough with threatening spikes but on the inside it's smooth and vulnerable. I added a seed inside to symbolize what the pod was protecting. The balance of vulnerability and toughness in nature is my inspiration.

Artist Statement: This bright blue satin dress with an edgy appliqué twist, a scalloped black linen neckline is part of my original “Satin and Ruffles” collection, which celebrates a fun and put together style. The complementary black linen pants with satin appliqué cuffs tie together this sleek and satiny look that can be worn by day and also go out at night!

Stalagmites and Palms
Stalagmites and Palms
Davis Publications Category Award: Printmaking
Organization or School Affiliation: Falmouth High School

Student Name: Asa Gummow
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: My first go at drypoint etching, sees a skull kid posed in a vigilant crouch, among a forest of stalagmites and palms which grow together in the dark. There was no conscious inspiration to this concept from what I can recall. I believe what really compelled its creation, was this specific juxtaposition you get when you place a huge, mean, prehistoric skull on top off something much more meek

Boom
Boom

Organization or School Affiliation: Norwood High School

Student Name: Zander Allan
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: I decided to create onomatopoeia artwork in this way because I felt truly inspired by the idea of demolition and explosives being used in a comedic and comical way. I also just simply enjoyed the idea of making an artwork that has quite a bit of story built into it, however, is simple to understand and comprehensible. I was determined to finish this piece and felt the drive to do so.

The Heart
The Heart

Organization or School Affiliation: Norwood High School

Student Name: Olivia Sawyers
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: I made a human heart out of paper, tape, glue, and acrylic paint "skin". Goals that I had for myself were to make it realistic, I wanted it to have lots of details, and for it to be the real size of a heart. I made the paint "skin" and stretched it over my armature to create the initial texture and details on the surface.

Change

Organization or School Affiliation: Norwood High School

Student Name: Era Begg
Grade: Grade 9
Artist Statement: Magic vs the natural event of death is an undercurrent theme in this piece. The rose is made more beautiful by the hand, symbolizing the beauty and value death gives to life. I think that death and life are the most obvious principles in my art as the hand and rose are the most obvious elements.
